AquaCell: The foundation behind FishInSight

On May 30th, 2023, we joined fellow researchers at CIIMAR for the final workshop of AquaCell, a project supported by the EEA Grants Bilateral Fund. This initiative marked the beginning of a collaborative journey between CIIMAR (Portugal) and Nord University (Norway), laying the groundwork for what would eventually become FishInSight.

AquaCell focused on developing innovative in vitro tools for aquaculture research. It was our first joint effort to explore ethical and efficient alternatives to live fish testing. Through this project, we established the scientific and technical collaboration that led us to create FishInSight’s more advanced platform, our current in vitro intestinal model.

The workshop brought together key contributors to the project, including Dr. Sónia Gomes, Dr. Mariana Ferreira (ICBAS/CIIMAR/Nord), Dr. Alexandra Correia (ICBAS/I3S), and Dr. Md Abdul Latif (Nord). Together, we shared project outcomes and reflected on how this partnership aligns with the broader goals of the EEA Grants: “Working together for a green, competitive, and inclusive Europe.”

AquaCell was more than a research project, it was a starting point! It provided both the inspiration and the technical foundation for FishInSight, and we’re proud to continue building on that vision with a solution that contributes to a more ethical, cost-effective, and sustainable future for aquaculture.
